Five Ways To Manage Fear When You Stretch Outside Your Comfort Zone
Five Ways To Manage Fear When You Stretch Outside Your Comfort Zone I thought about writing about growth, since itâs spring, and progress is something that occurs whenever you stretch outside your consolation zone. (I did write about growth for the 4/16 problem of the newsletter in case you missed that one!) But the flip facet of the positive development that comes if you stretch exterior your consolation zone is the discomfort, even fear, that always comes with that stretch. Professionally, the stretch would possibly appear to be this reader question concerning the discomfort round networking with executives two to three ranges above and out of doors your space. Personally, Iâm coping with a stretch of my very own as Iâll be beginning a efficiency residency at Broadway Comedy Club this week and guesting in eight pro shows over the next three weeks (Yikes, this was alleged to be a fun interest!). Having to take my own coaching advice and work by way of the fear reminded me that whenever you stretch outdoors your comfort zone, even should youâ ve carried out it with different situations, doesnât make this specific time any simpler. I didnât just attempt to encourage myself out of the discomfort (in spite of everything, if youâre paralyzed by concern, motivation goes out the window!). Instead I relied on strategies that have worked for me before, and hopefully theyâll give you the results you want too: Schedule your worry This was a sport-changer tip for me from my good friend and wonderful teaching colleague, Renita Kalhorn of Step Up Your Game. The tip is precisely because it sounds â" Renita recommends putting a date and time on the calendar for a fear session. When that date and time comes, you do all the freaking out you need. But until that date and time comes, when you find nervousness or worry coming over you, you table it for the appointed slot. Itâs a simple mental trick however I even have found it really lets me transfer on when the concern creeps up. Get ideas from how others have coped I am a giant fan of non-fiction reading â" business, finance, personal growth, and so forth. Many books provide anecdotes of individuals overcoming challenges or turning around a bad situation, and along the way in which, I actually have collected strategies and even simply inspiration from these stories. There are also particular books on overcoming concern. Most lately, the book Reach: A New Strategy to Help You Step Outside Your Comfort Zone, Rise to the Challenge and Build Confidence by Brandeis professor Andy Molinsky specifically offers some great advice on how to stretch exterior your comfort zone. Revisit your go-to rest triggers For me, train, journaling and meditation are my three go-to productiveness habits to get again my focus once I am out of sorts. Think again to the way you recharge and get again into focus, and construct these activities into your calendar whenever youâre going by way of a stretch. These relaxation triggers are sometimes the first things to get pushed off the schedule because you suppose you donât have time for them, however you actually save extra time than you lose. Start wherever Doing something, anything is often sufficient to calm your nerves. For me and my comedy stretch, I simply began writing down all of my jokes in a listing â" I didnât worry about editing or order or transitions. I simply started to make a list, and that information dump was enough to get me moving again on enhancing, order, transitions, and every thing else that is nonetheless important but that I was too overwhelmed to sort out on the time. Iâm nonetheless overwhelmed and never feeling the place Iâd wish to be three days to the first show, but Iâm still shifting ahead. Starting somewhere, anywhere is the best way to break out of the paralysis. Set it and forget it Just like you possibly canât rely on motivation to quell your fear (therefore scheduling it, as in tip #1), you also canât depend on motivation to move ahead. Once you have a plan of motion, set appointments in your calendar to do the work. The benefits are twofold: 1) by blocking day without work for next steps now, you donât overbook yourself with other things; and 2) by scheduling appointments you get regular reminders to maneuver forward on your stretch. You donât should âdiscoverâ the time or motivation â" the activities show up for you. I donât know that following this formula will mean that I even have good units for my comedy residency, but at least I actually have a plan that retains me shifting and props me up after I canât do it myself.
